Players were welcomed to Days Inn, Lebanon, TN by a nice office
desktop display announcing
"Welcome ! 2013 Tennessee Open Checker Tournament"
Congratulations! To GM Alex Moiseyev of Dublin, Ohio as winner of the
2013 Tennessee Open Tournament, his tenth time winning this title. Congratulations! To Nick Boatman of Pegram, TN as the 2013 Tennessee
State Champion, his first
Tennessee State Championship Title.
Congratulations! IM Michael
Holmes of Louisville, KY; GM John Webster of Stoneville, NC; and Nick
Boatman of Pegram, TN who finished 2nd Place in a 3-Way Tie on game points
and separated by honor points. Congratulations! IM Chuck
Freeman of Louisville, KY; GM Jim Morrison of Glasgow, KY; and IM Larry Keen
of Halls, TN who finished 5th Place in a 3-Way Tie on game points and
separated by honor points. Congratulations! Alex Holmes of
Sellersburg, IN who is the youngest Master on ACF records at the age of 14
years old. Congratulations!
To Ken Shultz of
Cosby, TN and Raleigh Johnson of Murfreesboro, NC as our Major Division
Champions of the 2013 Tennessee Open. Ken is recognized at the
Tennessee Majors Champion over Raleigh on honor points. Congratulations! To Bryce,
Mike, and John who finished 3rd Place 2013 TN Majors Division in a 3-Way Tie
on game points and Bryce separated by honor points. GM
stands for Grand
Master, IM for International Master, and CM for Candidate Master, which are
earned titles given by WCDF to distinguish players.
ACF Rating - Ratings supplied by ICH Checkers
"T" separates player's opponent
from player's round points and a / separates his accumulated game points.
Draw is 1, Win is 2 points, Bye is 3, and Forfeit is 4. There is a slight difference in
Frank Davis Scoresheet and the
below honor points for the Majors Division as Jerry Askins, Neil Wenberg,
and Trey Stanley but it doesn't change the finish positions. The Arifilms Production crew was present
all three days of the tournament doing a TV production about "Backyard Oil
Barons" which involved Jimmy Reliford who owns Jimmy Reliford Drilling
Company in Columbia, KY. They are filming Jimmy Reliford and some of
the other drilling companies in the area. The Tennessee Open was
filmed because it was part of some of the activities Reliford does and
enjoys. This episode is to be shown April 26 on the Discovery Channel
after “Deadliest
Catch.”
Frank Davis referenced a letter he received from Alan Millhone about deceased ACF Life-Time
members and that he also mentioned he would not be attended the TN Open because
of prior commitments, but hopefully others in near future.
Frank Davis also referenced a letter he received from Leonard
Hickman's attorney stating Leonard willed Tennessee Checker Association
$10,000 to be use over the next 10 years. Mr. Davis express our
appreciation and gratitude for this gift to encourage younger players to
participate in the
Tennessee Tournaments by applying the prize fund only to the minors and
majors division. You can read the specific details here: Leonard
Hickman $10,000.00 gift. In addition to Leonard Hickman who died
January 2, 2013 there were other deceased Tennessee Tournament players in 2012 that
Frank remembered: James Nash, Gayle Helterbrand, Bill McClintock,
James Atkins, Earle Sweatmon, and Bob Finchum who you may review their obituaries
on this site.
Frank Davis recognized Ken Christian for the excellent job in
gathering up plenty of door prizes supplied by several local merchants, Wilson County
Visitors Center, Wilson County Chamber of Commerce, and Wilson Bank &
Trust, all in the form of merchandise for door prizes and arranging player's discounts & coupons for the tournament.
Players' names are randomly drawn from a hat until all door prizes are given
out. Frank reported on the Gene Lindsay Fund, reporting this year's
interest $337 was down from last years, but the principal was secure in a
deposit account at F&M Bank in Clarksville, TN requiring 3 signatures (Davis,
Christian, & Burton). The interest yield will hopefully increase.
Only interest is used to fund the TN Open. We voted to keep the
same TCA officers: Frank Davis - President & the TN Open Director, Ken
Christian - Vice President, and Mary Davis -
Secretary/Treasurer of TCA & administrator / score-keeper for TN Open.
Tournament rules were reviewed and we voted to re-pairing opponents
so that it could only occur in last round when necessary (one time). Frank indicated he would make a judgment call on overtime game endings or elect another Masters to
help him, if a computer analysis was requested by a Master it should show a KingsRow's score value of 60 point for a win. Other rules were reviewed such as: player may request their 1st game completed by
the referee's decision so their 2nd game of that round starts on time for equal time & fairness; a 3 point bye round would be awarded as the first bye, thereafter to the
lowest opponent; only two points per multiple byes will be awarded; if a player is 15 minutes late, then the game will be forfeited; if a player is 1 hour late or more, then both games will be forfeited; 4
points for a forfeit (2 per game) (Posted Rules)
Under new business Hollis McClard spoke about the availability of Comfort Suites
and their nicer playing room which cost approximately $32 more per night but
provided bigger & nicer rooms, and playing facilities. Discussion
followed, motion was made to vote on keeping the tournament at Days Inn or
moving to Comfort Suites in 2014. The members voted to keep the Days Inn as
the Tennessee Open and Southern venue for 2014. There was also
discussion about changing the Tennessee Open's dates, but after discussion a
motion was made to keep or change, and the members voted to keep the dates
for the Tennessee Open as traditionally set for the 1st weekend in March
(Friday, Saturday, & Sunday).
Frank Davis also recognized the
Stanleys... (Mr. Bill -
Grandfather, Teal - Son, and Trey - Grandson) Teal was presented a
nice set of Crisloid Catalin interlocking yellow & red tournament checkers to give
to Bill who did not make this tournament. Other tournaments were announced as: Joe Schwartz -
Hallandale, FL 3-Move, March 22-24th; Lexington, KY Checker Club
March 29th; Illinois State Open is April 6 & 7th; Missouri
State 3-Move, April 20th; Greensboro, NC 3-Move April 20th; and the
Strawberry 3-Move, May 10 & 11th. Neil Wenberg had a
full
Mike Ross had his honey for sale which seems to be an anticipated & requested
item.
Neil Wenberg was the only player to sign up to play Minors,
so the tournament director move him up to make an even number of 18 players
in the Major Division, and there were 14 Masters, making the total field of 32 players this year. We appreciated the donations and
contributions which totaled $1,377.00
for the total cash prize fund, which was displayed on the bulletin board
indicating all donations and fund amounts. Pay-Out is a few dollars
more than posted prize fund because Frank rounds up to whole $ during pay
out. Steve Watkins, Vonda and Otis Jones, Hugh & Peggy Burton all attended the tournament. Wives and
player friends attending were: Sue Tucker, Mickey Webster, Shirley Lerum, Mary Davis, Bernice Powell, Terry Gober, Helen Vinson,
Mary Morville, Carol Estes, Carol Wenberg, and Jim Worley,
“Worley Bird” who is Jimmy Reliford's friend
from Columbia, KY. Management at Days Inn again confirmed their appreciation for the TN Open venue by providing pizza
and soft drinks on Friday evening which everyone (players, spouses, &
family) enjoyed! This makes the seventh year TN Checker Association has
chosen this location after moving it from Best Western Executive Inn,
Lebanon in 2006 which ended that long time venue. We appreciate Frank Davis, Tournament Director and Referee in addition to Mary Davis, scorekeeper who did a
fantastic job as usual. We really appreciate these well run tourneys and also John Acker for reporting the results in a timely manner by Michael Holmes
and JR Smith calling in or emailing results to John so he could post his scoresheet on the ACF forum or give a link to his blog (documents.) Weather reporters were calling for snow Friday & Saturday
which we did get a little snow, but and it was cold all weekend. Sunday service was enjoyable with a message about you having the
opportunity to be of service and a witness for Christ by Larry Pollard. Most players enjoyed at least several meals with each other at either Shoney's breakfast
& lunch buffet, Cracker Barrel, Sunset, or Demo's. A delightful tournament & wonderful fellowship was had
by all who attended.
Congratulations, Ken!
